May 27, 2012 Prayer Note

Dear Family & Friends,

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.  Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.”

I Peter 5:8-9

Life is hard at times.  At particular times we receive word that a friend somewhere is undergoing hardship.  Sometimes it is health related.  Other times it has to do with relationships.  It could be economic in nature as well.  It does not matter, for in each situation we have the opportunity to glorify God or to be devoured by the devil.  We want to encourage you this week to be alert to what the devil might be using to bring about discouragement and eventually sin in your life.  When you recognize where he is at work, take that matter to God in prayer immediately, and also share it with a fellow believer.  In this way, we can stand firm together.  Please pray that we practice what we preach.

Several of us that work together in the His Hands ministry will be in training this week on relationship building.  The training will be from Tuesday until Friday.  Please pray that this training will provide us all with better relationship skills to use in our ministries.

This past week a dear friend, Phyllis Watkins, had an aneurism leak on her brain.  She was taken into surgery to remove a blood clot and repair the blood vessel.  She has done well since the surgery, but there is still a chance that she could have a stroke.  Please pray for Phyllis to continue to heal and for the family as they support her.

Thank you for praying that our vehicles would sell.  The Buick sold this past week.  The van is still available.  Please pray that we can sell it soon.  We are also finding the market over here for good used vans is expensive.  Please pray that we find the proper vehicle at a good price.

Jeff & Michelle Michael will be traveling this Wednesday and Thursday to Taiwan in order to pick-up their adoptive son Isaiah!  Isaiah is 3 1/2 years old and is Malachi’s biological, older brother. He also has no English background whatsoever. Please pray for their safety as they travel.  Pray as well for the transition that Isaiah must make from his foster family to the Michael family, and that God will give Jeff and Michelle absolutely everything they need as they bring their new son into their home and care.

Thank you for praying.

God Bless,

John & Cheryl

1.  Please pray that we all are able recognize satan’s attacks and stand firm.

2.  Please pray for the training taking place at His Hands this week.

3.  Please pray for John as he discusses plans with leaders this coming week.

4.  Please pray for Phyllis Watkins and her family as she recovers.

5.  Praise God that our car sold.  Please pray that the van sells and that we can find a van here in Taiwan.

6.  Please pray for the Michaels as they travel and for Isaiah’s transition.

May 20, 2012 Prayer Note

Dear Family and Friends,

“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.”  James 3:17-18 NIV

Wow!  God’s wisdom is so great that it encompasses everything we need.  Think about how much of our lives are built upon relationships with others, including our God.  Then look at these two verses in James.  Just think what it would be like if we took the time to seek God’s wisdom about how to relate to others.  We could head-off many arguments and disagreements just by having an attitude that was directed by God’s wondrous wisdom.  Please pray for us as we try to apply God’s wisdom in our daily living.  Pray specifically today as John meets with the leadership of the Good News congregation.

We are busy washing our clothes that were left here in Taiwan, cleaning the wardrobes and chests of drawers and other things that have not be moved or used for a year, which allows mold and mildew to set in.  We have also already completed our yearly paperwork that allows us to stay in Taiwan, but also have insurance, taxes, school bills and other items such as this to deal with.  We are also making lists of things to do and purchase.  Ask us in about two weeks if we are settled in or not.  Thank you for praying for us as we adjust back into life here in Taiwan.

The day before we returned to Taiwan, Chris and Samantha moved out of our place into a place of their own.  They still need to purchase appliances and other necessities it takes to set up a home.  Please pray for them as they once again transition into a new place with a 3 month old.  I’m sure they are very glad to be setting up their own home, but this comes with some stressful times as well.

Please pray for John’s aunt, Marjorie Cardwell, as she recovers from hip replacement surgery.  She is home and doing well.

We appreciate so much the prayers that were said for us as we traveled here to Taiwan.  Everything went very smoothly.  We also so grateful for everyone that helped us get on our way.  Our parents took us to the airport.  People at Parkview C.C. are taking care of the house we lived in and returning all the things that we loaned to us to use.  Thank you!

Please continue to pray that our 2000 Honda Odyssey and 2002 Buick Park Avenue will both sell soon.

Thanks for praying.

God Bless,

John & Cheryl

1.  Please pray for John to have wisdom as he meets with the leadership at the Good News congregation and as we live as God’s witnesses.

2.  Thank you for lifting us up in this time of transition.

3.  Pray for Chris, Samantha, and Hosanna as they go through transitions into a new home.

4.  Please pray for Marjorie Cardwell, John’s aunt, as she recuperates from hip surgery.

5.  Praise God for a smooth trip back to Taiwan and for all those who helped us get here.

6.  Pray that our vehicles will sell soon.

May 13, 2012 Prayer Note

Dear Family & Friends,

“I thank my God every time I remember you. I always pray with joy in my every prayer for all of you  because of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now.”  Philippians 1:3-5

Thank you for your great support of us through the years.  Many of you have prayed for us and sent gifts since we began preparing to work in Taiwan.  This past week Parkview Christian Church blessed us with a special offering of over $17,000 to help with travel, schooling, and other expenses.  PTL!  We also recently received a special gift of $1,000 from the First Christian Church in Fairfield toward our van fund.  Thank you so very much.  We’ve enjoyed visiting with many of you this past year.  We look forward to many more years of partnership in the Gospel.

We’ve been enjoying a few days with Bethany, Philip, and Juliet.  We praise God for our family.  We wish we could spend more time here, but we need to get back on island soon to process our resident visas.  We are missing being with our own mothers today, but it is a blessing to be with Bethany on her first Mother’s Day.  Please continue to pray for our family as we all get used to being separated by thousands of miles again.

Chris and Samantha Sanford have been staying in our apartment since December.  They recently signed a contract on an apartment.  Please pray for them as they move and set-up their home.  Please pray that little Hosanna will have a smooth transition.

Dave & Jeanay Stiles continue to work with an English speaking congregation.  They are intentionally moving in the direction of servant ministry in Kaohsiung and beyond.  They are also involved with discipleship training seminars.  Please continue to support our team in prayer.

Please pray for this summer’s activities.  We will once again be a part of the annual Sports and English Camp.  Please pray for the 140 campers that will be attending and for the VBS that the Eternal Light congregation will be holding as well.  Pray that God will prepare the hearts of all the students and teachers for both of these activities.

We fly out of Seattle on Tuesday afternoon.  We have a long layover in South Korea, so we won’t get to Taiwan until noon on Thursday,Taiwan time.  We would appreciate your prayers for our trip.

1.  Praise God for the partnership He has given us in the Gospel.

2.  Please pray for our family and us as we are once again half a world’s distance from each other.

3.  Please pray for Sanfords as they move into their new apartment.

4.  Please pray for our the Stiles as they continue to train the church they are working with.

5.  Please pray for Sports and English Camp and VBS.

6.  Please pray for us as we begin our flights to Taiwan on Tuesday afternoon.

May 6, 2012 Prayer Note

Dear Family & Friends,

“While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was greatly upset because he saw the city was full of idols.  So he was addressing the Jews and the God-fearing Gentiles in the synagogue, and in the marketplace every day those who happened to be there.”  Acts 17:16-17

Paul was so distressed by the idolatry that he saw in the city that he began to speak to anyone that he could.  He presented the gospel to the Jews and the Gentiles, young and the old, the rich and the poor alike.  Paul could not stand to see a human heart given in worship to anyone or anything except God our Father.  What is our response when we see people worshipping self, work, entertainment, security, …. ? Are we moved to action as the apostle?  We should be, because there is no other proper response than to present them with the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Please pray that we and your Taiwanese brothers and sisters will be driven to action in the face of idolatry.

Thank you for your prayers as we traveled to and from Nathanael’s graduation.  Everything went very well at the graduation ceremony and reception.  Our family helped to provide him with a great reception.  We also got to visit with Enny Li again on our trip to Knoxville.  Please pray for Nathanael as he looks for a job for this summer until he too leaves for his new job in Taipei.

Thank you for praying for Isaiah’s adoption during this past year.  Jeff and Michelle should be able to travel to Taiwan this month to pick him up and acquire his visa.  Please pray that all continues to go smoothly.

We will be flying out of Indianapolis this Wednesday morning to Seattle.  We will then drive to Philip and Bethany’s home to visit with them for 6 days.  We will then fly out of Seattle for Taiwan on the 15th.  Please pray that we have a safe journey.

We will be worshipping at Parkview C. C. today.  John will be preaching.  Cheryl, Andrew, and Moriah will be speaking as well. Parkview is representing all of you, our supporters, as they give us a send off today.  Thank you for the wonderful blessing you are to us.

Thank you for praying.

God Bless,

John & Cheryl

1.  Please pray that as Christians our hearts are moved to action as we see the idolatry in the hearts of people around us.

2.  Please pray for Nathanael as he looks for a temporary job for the summer.

3.  Please pray for the final part of Isaiah’s adoption as the Michaels prepare to go to Taiwan this month.

4.  Please keep our family in your prayers as we begin our travels back to Taiwan.

5.  Praise God for the blessing of partnering together in the work of the Kingdom.

April 29, 2012 Prayer Note

Dear Family and Friends,

“Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming to hear him.  But the Pharisees and the experts in the law were complaining, ‘This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.’ … ‘In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels over one sinner who repents.’”  Luke 15:1-2, 10

Have you ever been questioned for being a friend to someone that is not a Christian or possibly someone that has bad habits or is considered undesirable?  If not, maybe you should have.  Jesus was questioned about those with whom he chose to welcome and eat.  Welcoming someone and eating with someone denotes acceptance.  How can we hope that they will come to repentance if we can not accept them as a fellow person that struggles with sin?  May we live that others will have the opportunity to repent and that there will be rejoicing in heaven.

Please pray for our fellow missionaries in Taiwan as some are going to be returning to the US on home assignment this summer.  The Atkins will be returning for their daughter’s, Tabitha, graduation for college.  The Pagels will be returning for the summer as well.  Please pray as they finish preparations and travel.

Please pray for our teammates Chris & Sam as they continue to look for an apartment and deal with a baby that has colic.  Please pray for Dave and Jeanay as they will be leading an “Empowering Relationships” seminar this Thursday and Friday.

Thank you for praying for Philip’s leg.  The doctor believes he has a pinched nerve in his back that is causing the leg pain.  Please pray that the inflammation will decrease.  Thank you for praying for Dean Elmore as he had a stint put in an artery in his heart.  Everything went very well.

We are in the midst of packing up our belongings, which means decisions about what is left, sold, given away, or packed to go.  We will also be traveling to Nathanael’s graduation on May 4,and we begin our trek back to Taiwan just a few days after that, leaving on May 9th from Indianapolis.  We will be visiting with Philip, Bethany, and Juliet for about 6 days before going on to Taiwan.  We will also have the opportunity to see John’s cousin, Becky, and her family too.  Please pray as we pack things up and begin our travels.

Please pray that we will be find buyers for our van and car soon.  We have a 2000 Honda Odyssey and a 2002 Buick Park Avenue.  If you would like more information on either vehicle, please call John at 618-553-5175.  We need to find a good used van when we get back to Taiwan.  The money from these two cars will help us to purchase this van.  We still need to raise some additional funds besides.

Thank you for praying.

God Bless,

John & Cheryl

1.  Please pray that we will be better at accepting sinners so as to win them to Christ.

2.  Please pray for our fellow missionaries who are returning to the US for home assignment this summer.

3.  Please pray for our teammates as they serve in Kaohsiung.

4.  Thank you for praying for Philip’s leg and Dean’s surgery.

5.  Please pray for our packing, traveling, and transitions.

6.  Please pray that we are able to sell our vehicles quickly.

April 16, 2012 Prayer Note

Dear Family & Friends,

“Now an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus, saying, ‘Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’  He said to him, ‘What is written in the law? How do you understand it?’ The expert answered, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.  Jesus said to him, ‘You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.’”  Luke 10:25-28

Yesterday through the message we heard and in Sunday School, we were reminded that the most important aspects of life are relational.  The answer to the expert in the law’s question is expressed in our relationship to God and to man.  We must learn to love God with our whole being.  We must also learn to love others as much as or more than we love ourselves.  Please join us in praying that we can be a living example of this type of love for the Taiwanese.

Please pray for the follow-up to the Easter outreach events.  Pray especially for one young lady that came to the Eternal light activities.  On Good Friday evening she attended a showing of “The Passion of Christ”.  She then came by on Saturday to ask some questions.  She also attended the Sunday outreach event.  No one has given us her name yet, but please pray that God will continue to stir up within her a desire to know Him.

Thank you for praying for Andrew as he recovers from his tonsillectomy.  He continues to do very well.  Our son-in-law, Philip, hurt his leg while working a couple of weeks ago.  It continues to give him trouble.  Please pray that it will heal soon.  Dean Elmore, a dear friend from Latona, is having a stint put in an artery in his heart this Thursday.  Please pray all will go well.

This Tuesday evening we will be having a Skype sessions with several of our co-workers on Taiwan.  We will be discussing and praying over the work that God has given us to do in Taiwan of planting churches and winning the lost.  We will be discussing and praying over strategies, shared resources, present situations and more.  We will begin our meeting at 9:00 p.m. central time.  Please join us in prayer.

We have begun saying our goodbyes.  This past weekend John’s mom hosted an open house for us.  Several family friends and relatives came by to visit.  It was a very nice afternoon.  This was probably our last trip to Bloomington before heading back to Taiwan.  We are preparing for Nathanael’s graduation and reception as we begin packing our things.  This is the more difficult time of our home service.  Please pray for our family, friends, and us as we once again say goodbye.

Thank you again for your prayers.

1.  Please pray that the Taiwanese will witness in us a love for God and others.

2.  Please pray for the young lady and others that attended the Easter outreach activities.

3.  Thank you for the prayers for Andrew.  Please pray for Philip and Dean.

4.  Please pray with all of our co-workers in Taiwan as we seek to be effective church planters and evangelists.

5.  Please pray as we begin preparing to return to Taiwan.  Please pray for Nathanael as he graduates.

April 8, 2012 Prayer Note

Dear Family and Friends,

“Give, and it will be given to you: A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be poured into your lap. For the measure you use will be the measure you receive.”  Luke 6:38

We all know that we should be a bless to others by giving to those in need, and through our tithes and offerings.  There are questions though, that tend to often limit our giving and therefore, our blessing.  How much should we give?  To whom should we give?  When should we give? People use different scriptures and reasoning to come up with an answer.  Jesus’s teaching here causes me to reason that the answers to these questions are not as important as choosing to give.  We should give to those who have a need as long as we have means to help.  Will you pray with me that we will exemplify a giving spirit among the Taiwanese as we give, serve, and rejoice in the blessings.

Next week, both the Good News & Eternal Light congregations are having special services.  Please pray that those who have been invited will attend.  Please pray as well that the message of the redemption through the cross of Christ will be proclaimed clearly.

Tomorrow, Monday, Andrew will be having his tonsils and adenoids removed.  Please pray for the doctor and nurses as they perform their tasks during the surgery.  Please pray for Andrew to recover quickly and fully.

Thank you for praying for Allison Snyder as she has had complications following her back surgery.  She is at home doing well.  Please pray for Cheryl’s aunt, Marilyn Smithpeters, as she goes to see another specialist concerning her cancer.  Please pray for Dean Elmore as he is scheduled for a heart catheterization on April 9th.

We enjoyed visiting with family and watching the production of “Hello Dolly” by the students at Johnson University.  Nathanael was the director.  Nathanael has enjoyed his time at Johnson, but is looking forward to having a place to serve.  He is hoping to work for a radio and television ministry in Taiwan.  He should receive news soon.  Please pray for him as he prepares to graduate and seeks employment and a place to serve.

Our time in the States is coming to a swift close.  We will fly out from Indianapolis on May 9th.  Please pray for us as we have many things to accomplish between now and then.  One order of business is to sell our vehicles.  We have a 2000 Honda Odyssey and a 2002 Buick Park Avenue.  If you are interested in either of these vehicles please call us at 618-553-5175.

We are grateful for your prayers.

God Bless,

John & Cheryl

2.  Please pray for the special services next Sunday by the Good News and Eternal Light congregations to bring glory to God.

March 18, 2012 Prayer Note

Dear Family & Friends,

“At that time you will say: ‘Praise the Lord!  Ask him for help!  Publicize his mighty acts among the nations!  Make it known that he is unique!  Sing to the Lord, for he has done magnificent things, let this be known throughout the earth!’”  Isaiah 12:4-5

We often ask our Lord for help when we know that something is too great for us to do on our own.  After the crisis is over and the Lord has brought us through do we tell others of what he has done for us?  Do we publicize His mighty acts in our lives?  This is more than just telling our friends that joined us in prayer.  This requires our testifying to those that did not even know what was going on in our lives.  We are to use it for God’s glory among the saved and the unsaved.  Join us in praying for opportunities to share God’s glorious deeds with others.

Please be praying for the annual Sports and English Camp that will July 8-15.  Today began the registration for this summer’s camp.  Please pray for all those involved as directors, faculty, and campers.

This is a very busy week for Nathanael.  He and his cast and crew have been preparing very hard for the presentation of the musical, “Hello Dolly!”  There will be three shows this week.  We will be traveling down to Tennessee to watch the musical this Friday.  Please pray for Nathanael and everyone involved.

Allison Snyder is at home on IV antibiotics after having yet another surgery to remove additional infection in her back.  Please pray that she will recover completely without any additional surgery or setbacks.

Please continue to pray for Isaiah’s adoption.  His birth mother has been found!  Please pray that the appropriate paper work will be submitted quickly so that the adoption can proceed.

Thank you for keeping all these concerns in your prayers.

1.  Praise God for His great deeds.  Ask God to give us opportunities to share His mighty deeds with others.

2.  Please pray for this year’s Sports & English Camp.

3.  Please pray for Nathanael as he has a busy week with the production of the musical.

4.  Please pray for Allison Snyder as she continues to recuperate after having back surgery and secondary infections.

5.  Please pray that Isaiah’s paperwork from his birth mom will be completed soon.

March 10, 2012 Prayer Note

Dear Family & Friends,

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.  For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.”  Matt. 16:24-25

The problem that most of us have with following Jesus, really following Jesus, is self-denial.  We like to be kind to people, to help those that are have lost their homes from a storm or fire, etc…  What we don’t want to do is change our way of living so as to serve as He did.  He denied himself comfort, position, and life in order to give us eternal life.  Can we not consider to change our lifestyle so as to serve, that others may have a chance to hear the gospel.  Please pray with me that Christians everywhere will truly follow Jesus, no matter the cost.

Please pray with us for the adoption process for Isaiah, Malachi Michael’s big brother.  The judge in Taiwan is asking the social worker to find the birth mother to get her permission to proceed with an international adoption.  Finding her could be difficult.  Please pray that God will intervene so that the adoption can proceed as quickly as possible.

There are many good things happening in Taiwan with our teams of missionaries and churches.  The Taiwan Christian Church in Taipei is preparing for the start of several house or simple churches.  The Come Christian Church in Taichung is doing the same.  The team in Feng Yuan has several groups that are in the process of becoming simple churches.  The Good News and Eternal Light congregations are not as far along, but there are some things happening that could prove positive for the growth of the kingdom.  Please pray for all these works.

We are grateful for the blessing of having good supporters.  Our bank balance has come up quite a bit in the past two months.  This is good because we have several expenses coming up.  One is that our van’s transmission needs to be rebuilt.  Two is that Andrew may have his tonsils taken out this spring.  Third is paying for Andrew & Moriah’s fall tuition.  There will also be expenses with our travel back to Taiwan, as well as expenses once we get on island after being gone for a year.  Please pray for us as we try to be good stewards.

Thank you for your prayers.

God Bless,

John & Cheryl

1.  Please pray that Christians everywhere will choose to deny self and follow Jesus.

2.  Please pray that Isaiah’s birth mom will be found quickly and that she will agree to the adoption.

3.  Please continue to pray for the church planting efforts in Taiwan.

4.  Please pray for us as we try to be good stewards with our finances.
