From a national partner serving in Ukraine:

The times of war between Ukraine and Russia are filled not only with sorrowful tales, but also with remarkable stories of how the Lord works within the hearts of His children. One living example is Tanya. Before the war, Tanya served in a local church, running a children’s development group, never contemplating leaving her town.

During this period, the church hosted refugees from Kherson who were members of the Christian Church. When Kherson was occupied, this church gathered aid, and together with their leader of youth ministry, they delivered assistance to Kherson. Roads were strewn with destroyed military and civilian vehicles, shattered buildings, and people lacking basic necessities.

They continued collecting aid for the Kherson region, understanding the locals’ plight differed significantly from their area. Meanwhile, Tanya dreamt of joining the efforts in Kherson, despite never having been there. In June 2023, she traveled with a team conducting day camps in villages, arriving at the Christian Church in Kherson.

Amidst the struggles and stories of war-torn children, witnessing families living in half-ruined homes without electricity weighed heavily on Tanya. Yet, she found surprising peace and tranquility in Kherson. Physically drained after the week-long camp, she returned home but remained fixated on Kherson, actively monitoring its situation. Connecting with the responsible person for children’s ministry there, she pledged her service if needed.

As the conflict escalated, many from their church left, increasing the workload. When asked to help at a camp for Kherson children, despite a lack of train tickets, Tanya was determined to assist, willing to endure a three-day journey. Reading the Bible at the camp, she sensed she wouldn’t be done with Kherson — a feeling reaffirmed amidst the chaos of explosions.

Taking a month for prayer and reflection, she contemplated God’s will, even as she mentally planned to close her business and leave her current ministry. By summer’s end, with a shortage of workers, the Christian Church contemplated opening a day educational center for children, proposing to Tanya, assuring her lodging and meals. Her decision awaited only her mother’s approval.

In an unexpected turn, her mother, despite the danger of the city, understood and released her daughter to the city under siege. Since September 2023, Tanya has served in the Day Educational Center, preparing children for school and conducting art therapy classes. Engaged with war-affected children, she realized her lack of psychological knowledge, and is now developing in this field for more effective support.

It’s heartening that such individuals serve within our Church, a testament to their resilience and commitment to helping others, even amidst adversity.
