Many Muslims in West Africa follow a type of folk Islam that combines Islamic practices with animistic idol worship and even the occult. They are captive to fear. Jihadi extremism is also on the rise across the region, with Boko Haram, the Islamic State, and Al Qaeda affiliates active in numerous countries. They are captive to violence. Huge tribes like the Fulani and Hausa span dozens of countries and consider themselves the protectors of Islam in West Africa. They are captive to pride. The great news is that more Muslims than ever before are hearing and responding to the fact that Jesus came to set captives free! Despite intense pressure and persecution, many are now following Christ! Praise the Lord! Sadly, most Muslims in West Africa have still not yet heard. It becomes more difficult by the day as Muslims pour massive resources into the region to claim new territory and influence. A battle for souls is raging. Pray for West Africa. Pray for demonstrations of God’s power to deliver people from gripping fear. Pray for village chiefs, elders, and imams to turn to Christ and lead their people to do the same.
