“From its chamber comes the whirlwind, and cold from the scattering winds. By the breath of God ice is given, and the broad waters are frozen fast.” (Job 37:9-10)

Iran, historically known as Persia, boasts one of the world’s oldest continuous major civilizations, stretching back over three thousand years. It was the Persian Empire under Cyrus the Great that freed the Jewish exiles from Babylon. The Magi who visited baby Jesus traveled from this region. Persian contributions to world culture include poetry, astronomy, mathematics, and carpet weaving. The warmth of Iranian hospitality, expressed through elaborate tea ceremonies and generous feasts, reflects a culture that values relationship and honor guests.

There are ninety-four unreached people groups in Iran, which has a population of ninety-two million people. Iran’s religious makeup is 97% Muslim, 1.9% Christian, 0.4% other, and 0.2% none.

Iran is ranked ninth on the World Watch List for persecution of Christians, enforcing strict apostacy laws for those converting from Islam. Punishment ranges from fines and floggings to prison terms. Distributing Christian literature and interaction with converts is illegal. Persecution includes job losses, alienation from family and community, and limited educational opportunities. Yet, the church in Iran is one of the fastest growing in the world!

Father, we want to pray for Iranian believers to have boldness and courage to participate in underground church networks. El Shaddai, protect and shield house church meetings from being discovered by authorities. We ask that believers would be wise as serpents and innocent as doves (Matthew 10:16) as they navigate extreme risks of obediently following Jesus in this hostile environment.

God of Blessing, we pray for believers to hunger for Your Word and be like trees planted by streams of water that will yield much fruit.
