The Songhai people have passed down a story for generations about a young woman named “Toula.” Once, there was a great drought that was so severe that the ponds and wells dried up. When the King of the Songhai village sought a solution for the lack of water, he was told that the god of water was displeased with him and the only way he would restore the water to the land was by sacrificing a beautiful young woman named “Toula.” As the story goes, the village had a large celebration with the intention to sacrifice the girl. A great thunderstorm came, and all the villagers fled, but “Toula” was taken and transformed into a water serpent. Her mother placed a curse on the descendants of the Songhai king. If any of his children came to the water, the serpent “Toula” would kill them. Many Songhai people continue to believe this story and are extremely fearful of bodies of water and rain. Even today, some Songhai people will use incantations to call on “Toula” to place a curse on others. Pray that the Songhai people would no longer be crippled by fear but would come into relation with the Living Water, Jesus Christ. Pray that the Songhai would not seek out evil spirits or participate in rituals to curse others. Pray that, instead, they would be a people who place their trust and security in the One True God.

Pray that God would grant this honor to those unbelievers, that they would choose to have God take up residence within them.
