There is a Zarma tradition that a father will bring his newborn infant to the river’s edge and place baby in the water. If the infant floats, the Zarma believe that the child is truly theirs. But if the infant begins to sink, another man is the father of the child. Even today, there are some Zarma people who practice this custom to determine the woman’s fidelity to her husband. If the child goes underwater, there is great shame associated with the child. Pray that the Zarma people would no longer place their trust in harmful superstitions and beliefs. Pray that the Zarma people would accept the salvation of Jesus Christ and become a people of humility, wisdom, and compassion.
