“Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come: as fish are caught in a cruel net, or birds are taken in a snare, so people are trapped by evil times that fall unexpectedly upon them.” (Ecclesiastes 9:12)
Over the past twenty-five years, thousands of new followers of Jesus have been born among peoples who were historically starved of the Gospel. These mass turnings to Jesus happen via church-planting movements or disciple-making movements and take many forms and names but share common features: 1. These movements are taking place among Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist peoples. 2. The Gospel spreads through family, household, and social networks. 3. The Gospel is introduced through a person of peace (Luke 10:6) who has an abundance of natural links in the community. The person of peace then introduces to their network the messenger of the Gospel. 4. Discipleship is learned in group meetings by discussing God’s Word and seeking to obey Jesus – a different approach from one Bible teacher instructing a class. Groups like this learn, remember, self-correct, take personal responsibility, and multiply faster than with a traditional approach. 5. Each person is taught to reproduce the discipleship process in his/her own networks. 6. Living out the Kingdom by serving others is seen as important in glorifying God as well as reducing hostility to the message. 7. These movements are birthed and bathed in prayer and fasting.
Father in heaven, we praise You for the drawing many thousands of people out of Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism to follow Jesus. We pray for movements to Christ around the globe to grow in wisdom and grace and to grow and spread multiplicably. We pray for unity between the traditional model and discipleship model so that Christ may be overall.
Team Expansion Worker
AB recently returned to the U.S. from an apprenticeship in South Asia. Please ask God for wisdom for future and for a smooth transition to whatever is next.
Pray for More Workers
Lord of the Harvest, thrust out workers to disciple new believers coming out of Islam. Thrust out disciple makers to teach believers coming out of Hinduism how to multiply disciples. Thrust out more workers to disciple those with Buddhist backgrounds.
