Upended, the family stood in line for food distribution with countless other refugee families just as thrown off as they were. With violence and oppression behind them and only uncertainty in the days ahead, they could barely think beyond the next meal.
But when the pastor handed them their box of provisions, he also submitted to the conviction that they needed a Bible. That day, they were given their future.
Following a Dream
Immediately, Saachi* began reading the Bible, and he was completely consumed by its words. Soon after, he had a dream of a man in white giving him a box. Inside the box, he found a glowing book. He couldn’t stop wondering about the dream and what it meant.
In a season full of confusion, animosity, betrayal, and caution, Saachi’s text to the pastor requesting an explanation was initially met with fear. Was Saachi a genuine seeker, or another trap for those who follow the Gospel? The pastor took the chance, and he found in Saachi an eager disciple for the Good News!
Unexpected Transformation
As Saachi studied more of the Bible, his life began to change. While learning about loving his enemies and giving up his own life for the glory of God, he surrendered his anger and violence, honoring his family and finding joy even in their tumultuous situation.
One day, Saachi returned home to discover his sons there alone. When his wife returned, he was amazed to learn that she’d been at the market, trying to find a cross necklace. Despite early resistance, his transformation had convinced her that she wanted to follow Jesus, too! (Later, the pastor’s wife gifted her the same necklace she’d been hoping to find!)
One day soon after, the pastor baptized Saachi and then Saachi baptized his wife. They were on a new path together.
Now, more than three years after that first encounter, Saachi and his wife lead a house church in their home. He guides several groups of Afghan seekers and believers through WhatsApp and Zoom meetings. He is deeply involved in the outreach to refugees and the lost throughout the region. They are committed to advancing the light of the Kingdom in the darkness!
