FAQ from potential missionaries: Can I work a job on the field, or do I have to raise all the money I’ll need?

Unless you’re really just independently wealthy, you’re still going to need to go through the support-raising process. But that’s not such a bad thing.

Unless you’re really just independently wealthy, you’re still going to need to go through the support-raising process.

In this increasingly “creative access” world where the Gospel is yet to go, many missionaries are going to need legitimate business platforms in order even enter the otherwise closed countries. And, thankfully, some of those opportunities are going to be profitable. That’s a good thing.

But you’re still going to need to raise support, usually a lot of support. Because it takes time and effort to make a business profitable, and you need to be able to survive and sustain your family in the meantime.

And you will need funds for travel, education, ministry, communication, training, resources, insurances, hospitality, medical care, language acquisition, security, technology, and furniture. Among other things.

Benefits and Purpose of Support-Raising

You’re going to see God doing amazing and awesome things. Why would you want to experience that alone?

Raising support is not just about getting enough money to go to the field.

It’s about creating a team of people dedicated to seeing you thrive and succeed on the field where you’ll desperately need the prayers and encouragement of an army of people back home.

It’s about opening the eyes and hearts of people in your circles to recognize the desperate plight of unreached people groups – and challenging those Christians to action.

It’s about relinquishing control of your own comfort and trusting God to provide everything you need from the hands of people He’s calling to give.

When you get to the field, you’re going to see God doing amazing and awesome things to bring Himself glory among every tongue, tribe, and nation. Why would you want to experience that alone when you could share it with a whole team of people?
